Foreign Secretary David Lammy

At today’s statement on the situation in the Middle East, Foreign Secretary David Lammy made clear the government’s view that the use of the term ‘genocide’ to refer to the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza “undermines the seriousness” of the term.

In response to a question from a Conservative member, he said: “These are legal terms, and they must be determined by international courts. I agree with the hon. Gentleman that those terms were largely used when millions of people lost their lives in crises such as Rwanda and the Holocaust of the second world war. The way that people are now using those terms undermines their seriousness.”
