Foreign Office Minister Catherine West

At today’s Urgent Question on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Foreign Office Minister Catherine West set out the government’s condemnation of “the most macabre of pantomimes” evident in the Hamas hostage release ceremonies in recent weeks in Gaza. She added: “That cruelty is utterly unacceptable, and the UK has made that very clear to interlocutors, both at ministerial and Foreign Secretary level.”

Later, in her response to a question from Conservative MP Kit Malthouse asking “Why has not she mentioned the return of the Palestinian non-combatants?”, the Minister reminded him “that there are concerns that some people who might have been released should not have been. All of that has to be taken in the round and balanced. I encourage balance and understanding about the suffering of both sides of the community and the desire for security in the words that we use in the House.”
