This week, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held a joint press conference on a number of international challenges facing the two countries, including the situation in the Middle East.
During the conference, Lammy stressed the UK’s commitment to brokering peace in the Middle East. He highlighted ongoing efforts for a ceasefire and hostage deal, as well as longer-term stability in the region.
Lammy and Blinken addressed concerns about Iran’s destabilizing activities. Lammy spoke about the need to confront Iran’s influence in the region, including its backing of proxy groups that fuel conflicts in countries such as Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. He stated that both the UK and US are “set on tackling Iran’s malign activity in the region”, underscoring the need for a united front in dealing with Tehran’s disruptive behaviour.
Lammy also drew attention to Iran’s growing support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He noted that Iran’s provision of drones and other military aid to Moscow is directly aiding Putin’s illegal war, further establishing Iran’s position as a malign actor. This, Lammy argued, is yet another reason why the UK and US must continue to confront Iran’s actions with determination and unity.
